Class on Advaita Vedanta

I took a class on “What is Advaita Vedanta?” to a small group of Vedanta students. It has come out well. It is 1 hour 40 mins. You can listen to it here. [audio:What is Advaita.mp3] If you want to download it, you can click here. It a 34.5MB mp3 file.

I had not intended to record the class, and only after the class I felt that it could have been recorded. A week later I came to know that Prasad had recorded it. Thanks to Prasad for recording the class. I added the Gurustuti later in the beginning.

I am unable to get the subject object thing around 18th min. Suppose I say I am angry which is the subject? You say that intellect is the subject. Next suppose I say I have understood. Here you say intellect is the object. Then what is the subject? Jiva? Ego?

Another question: Suppose I listen from a doctor that I cannot see yellow color. Then the ears becomes a subject and eyes an object. At the same time, I see a note written by a doctor that my ears cannot process the akshara “ka”. So now my eyes becomes a subject and ears become an object. Combining the two statement, we get that eyes can become a subject of itself.

    Dear Viswanath,

    Excellent questions.

    1. When we say “I have understood”, surely the intellect is the object. There is a witness (saakshi) behind, who is the subject.

    2. Information conveyed through language comes under a different pramaana called sabda pramaana. Here, the sound or letters by themselves do not convey any information. You should know the language to get the information. This is not pratyaksha pramaana, though it depends on pratyaksha as an instrument.

    With regards,
